That's only 272 mph / 439 kph, so it is beyond the rate gravity could achieve (even for a bullet it's around 18,000 feet per minute), but if the engines were going the plane is going to act like a bullet if it hasn't broken up and would have that extra speed (it would need around an extra 68 mph or 115 kph assist to get up to the peaks of 24,000 feet per minute). The plane had virtually no ground speed so it was going straight down.

 

 

I mean, it's possible that (one way or another) the plane was forced more or less straight up outside of the pilots control and then stalled, and then went straight down with the engine occasionally sputtering back to life boosting the descent the needed 68 mph above terminal velocity
