A deep excavation is an excavation in soil or rock typically more than 15 ft (4.5m) deep. Deep excavations require careful design & planning especially when constructed in urban areas. Retaining wall and support system selection in deep excavations can have significant impact on time cost and performance.

Soil nailing is an economical technique for stabilizing slopes and for constructing retaining walls from the top down. This ground reinforcement process uses steel tendons which are drilled and grouted into the soil to create a composite mass similar to a gravity wall.

A shotcrete facing is typically applied, though many architectural options such as precast panels or "green" vegetated cells are available for permanent wall facings.

Sinorock has a versatile fleet of equipment that is specially designed for soil nailing. We have found soil nail walls to be a very attractive alternative to cut retaining walls.

Soil nailing is typically used to stabilize existing slopes or excavations where top-to-bottom construction is advantageous compared to other retaining wall systems. For certain conditions, soil nailing offers a viable alternative from the viewpoint of technical feasibility, construction costs, and construction duration when compared to ground anchor walls, which is another popular top-to bottom retaining system.

Soil nail walls are particularly well suited to excavation applications for ground conditions that require vertical or near-vertical cuts and have been shown to be particularly well suited in the following temporary or permanent applications:

Roadway cut excavations.

Road widening under an existing bridge end.

Repair and reconstruction of existing retaining structures.

Temporary or permanent excavations in an urban environment.
